Tach Problem

Albemarle Express with TAMD41P-A's. For last few years the starboard tach wont work until I rev engine up over 2k, then it "breaks loose".

Usual drill is to start engine, alarm sounds continuouslydue to tach not working, I wait until engine is warmed up then I bump throttleover 2k quickly and the tach “breaks loose” and begins to register correctrpm. I have changed out alternators, movedtachs (both lower and upper station) over to port engine to see if it is agauge prob, but they work fine. They areold VDO gauges btw.

Frustrated. any ideas amigos!??

Put a voltmeter on your alternator output and see whether you have any output (beyond the 12.8V battery reading before the tack kicks in. Don't know about your engines, but sometimes the field winding is fed via an oil pressure switch or similar and the alternator isn't activated until you make oil pressure or similar.
