Broken Oil Dipstick Tube

Okay, here we go, first post. My boat has a '71 LM318. Bought the boat (project) last fall. Have never run the engine. As part of prepping it for light off I will have to replace the dipstick/tube. The dipstick tube is broke off flush with the block. Read one post here about drilling/tapping/pulling the broken off portion of the tube. Haven't tried that yet but another thought came to mind. Could I drive the remaining portion in and let it fall into the oil pan? I don't think it would interfere with the oil pickup by just laying in the bottom of the pan. Any help on removing the old tube is appreciated.

If all else fails you could drive it I there, but I'd try to get it out with an Ezey Out (made for removing broken bolts). Get it to rotate, then stick a drill motor on the Ezey Out and spin it out of there.
