which thermostat to use sierra or oem type in 1980's ford 5,8l PCM engine

Hi All,
I ordered a sierra 18-3551= 142 degree thermostat for raw water for 1980's ford 302 and 351w but it looks a lot different from the oem thermostat-but it fits in the
housing ok. A lot of marine suppliers sell the sierra thermostat. Is there any noticeable or significant differences between them?
