1984 mercury 40 HP 2 stroke

I'm having a problem with my outboard. It runs all day just fine and puts out power on low revs. My problem comes when I run it up to full throttle. The engine revs to full power but the prop stops biting or the transmission is slipping. It's either one of the two. It's a fixed trim so I don't think trim is the issue.

The boat/motor is new to me so any suggestions would help.

Is there a way to tell if the prop is cavitating?

Is it the transmission?

Thanks.

..."Not likely a slipping clutch on a Mercury motor. "

In the LU, yes. But not in the prop hub--that's where the problem is.

Why not likely with Mercury prop? Have had 40 and 50 hp mercury, both have had rubber clutch in prop slipping resulting in low speed movement but slippage when power supplied to engine. Baffled as why Merc props do not do this as stated by previous reply.

bitsy4643 in post#2 he is talking about the clutch dog in the lower unit not the rubber prop hub. Mercury motors seldom have lower unit issues with the clutch dog they make a pretty durable unit. But all motors have issues with prop hubs at one time or another the newer insert hubs have helped with that issue and almost eliminated it.
