1986 merc 25hp barring carrier assembly installation.

I am not sure how many turns I'm supposed thread the carrier bearing assembly back into the lower unit. the seloc manual states there is no specific amount of turns and that it's a trial and error thing. so I need to know how I test it and if i install it while the shift shaft is in neutral.
 
if it goes in too far the forward and reverse gears are both spinning and there is no neutral. i couldn't find a thread that had my similar problem until I created this one and it led me to a thread that had the answer I needed. hopefully it works. I'm going to run it tomorrow in a drum. I really appreciate the response.

Thus the need to use a factory manual........
left hand thread turn until it's tight

You hand thread it in till tight( so you wont pinch o-ring) and then tighten to 80ft lbs...
