1995 40hp Force water in cylinder

I have a 1995 hp Force that has always ran very well. It started running rough and after checking the spark plugs I noticed some water in the bottom cylinder. I was told that I should do a compression test first. I would like some suggestions on what else I should look for and what would cause the water intrusion into the cylinder?

Welcome.
Usually 2 places for water intrusion.
The head gasket or the exhaust chest.

Don't let it set with water in there.
Spray with WD or any spray lube.

Do the compression test. Remove both plugs while doing the test.
If one cyl. is lower it's probably the head gasket.
Post the results.

Remove the head and inspect the gasket.

That ok?
Then the exhaust chest gaskets are next.

Be VERY careful when removing any bolts as the corrosion can lock them in place and you end up twisting off the heads.

The exhaust chest is particularly prone to the screws twisting off.
Be careful.

I spray and heat and spray and heat. Just in case.

Jerry, compression was at 125 psi each cylinder. Head gasket didn't appear to be damaged. You had mentioned the exhaust. Can you provide me with more info regarding that? I've also read something about reed valves.
