Do I need 2 fuel filters?

My boat has a RACOR 10 Micron Spin-On Fuel Filter/Water Separator. I just changed the element. Located between the fuel tank and the motor.

My motor also has a fuel filter.

Question: Do I need to have 2 fuel filters? Can I eliminate the inline motor fuel filter or is that a bad idea?

Thanks for your help.

No you need both of them. I think Mercury recommends the racor as do most boat builders in new installations. It will catch what the inline filter would miss.

That filter BEFORE the fuel pump is way too fine--should be 25 to 30 micron (to stop large particles). Running a 10 micron before the weal vacuum pump of an OB is asking for trouble.

Agreed. My technician always goes with the manufacturer's recommendation. I did not have access to Mercury data for that engine. Sierra's (or Quicksilver's) 21u filter should be fine. I am pretty sure Sierra is the OEM for Mercury's filter kits. Avoid other generic brands. Don't ask me how I know that.
