40 vro

I recently purchased a 75 chrysler tri hull boat with a 40 vro outboarf..the motor starts and runs good but when you run it up to top speed it starts cutting out and dies out real bad till you throttle it back then it runs good again...any idea what is causing this

If this is a VRO maybe a Johnson or Evinrude it needs to be in that section.
You'll probably get better results there.
It sounds like there might be a fuel line restriction.
Ethanol is messing with older hoses and some plastics.
It's melting the inside of the hoses.
Is the vent on the tank clear/ open

Replace the hoses and squeezie.
Install a new filter inline. Usually between the pump and carb.
If there is one in there? More than likely it's the original.
Clean the carbs.
