1985 Bayliner Capri with 5.0 L 4V OMC Sterndrive ran beautifully Saturday night, but seemed like it wouldn't shift into reverse as we approached the ramp, then seemed not to shift into forward. Had to walk the boat onto the trailer. Drive is stuck in gear & overloads the starter so engine won't start. Cannot get drive into neutral and don't yet have a service manual. Shift cable moves on drive end, and is fully attached on control end. Shifting has always caused chatter, but never locked it up.
Any suggestions while I wait for manual to arrive?
