Chrysler 6hp tiller help

Hello I just bought a 197? Chrysler 6hp outboard and it won't shift gears
it is stuck in reverse right now.
Im not sure where to even start on this motor any help would be appreciated.
 
Welcome.
Lots of times the shift rod where it goes into the gear case, it gets corroded and seizes.
Or the linkage seizes from no lubrication.
Look for a parts diagram and see if you can locate the pieces and parts?
boats . net has a good parts diagram.
Post the model and serial# and I can figure out the year.
Mastertech Marine has a help section to figure out the year.
