Won't go into gear

I was cruising along and it started losing power. It came to a halt, so I placed it in neutral and checked fluids. I filled up the drive gear oil and tried it again. The engine cranks, but does not move when you put it in gear in forward or reverse. Now I smell burnt oil smell and have no propulsion either way.

You could not have filled the drive from the bottle.Simply filling the bottle does not fill the outdrive so my guess is a damaged gearset in the
upper unit.Once on land, remove the 4 screws in the top cap and lift it off. post the results
