OMC upper outdrive plug

I bought a new 1987 Bayliner boat and made the mistake of pulling the plug and losing the nut from the upper out drive. I currently have the 3.0 engine removed. How much work is it to find the plug nut after pulling the outdrive? Do I need to wait until engine is back in to maintain alignment? Any recommendations on what to put in hole? Former owner had duct tape over it and I mistook it for the lower end lube vent.

Pull the drive off any time and the backing nut will be in the cavity where the plug was. You can pull the drive any old time, in fact it's easier to R&R an engine pulling the drive.

A shop used permatex on mine and it blew out I suggest getting the original flat metal piece, it should be in the water passage or call John S at 516 764 3300 and get the parts and fix it right then cover the screw head with permatex or marine 5200 adhesive sealant

Thanks. I suppose permatex works for getting the seal back to transom?

Huh,..??

To pull the motor, ya pull the drive, then the motor,....

Goin' back in, ya drop in the motor, align it with the bar, then reinstall the drive,.....

The drive seals to the gimbel with gaskets or seals or o-rings,...

I don't do much with OMCs,...

For that screw, slather it with epoxy, so's it can never be removed again,....

It's known on many forums as the "OMC, Stupid Screw",.....
It serves no purpose, 'n if removed, ya feel pretty stupid,....
