Tohatsu 35hp Outboard Rattling

Hi All! On our most recent fishing trip we were heading into shore travelling at approx 35kms with my two 35hp Tohatsu outboards when x1 suddenly made a loud rattling/banging noise that seems to be coming from the mid section. We then made it inshore with x1 working Upon disassembling the lower unit I found hardly any oil and approx 60 ml of water. I researched/inspected this further and found the cause to be a seal issue. I have refilled the gear lube /oil and started the motor for 5-10 secs with the muffs on. What could be the issue causing the loud rattling/ clacking noise coming from the midsection. If something has broken off in the midsection what is it likely to be and is it difficult to disassemble the midsection to inspect as it sounds as though something is rattling around very fast. I only ran it for 15-30 seconds since this problem started and am afraid if I run it longer it may seize or cause further irreversible damage. Any info will be helpful. Regards,
