I have a mercury thunderbolt 2 stroke 1972 50 hp outboard. I finally got it running but now it won't run faster than 5 mph and I can't figure out why. I have tried new gas and sea foam, and the carbs were cleaned fairly recently. Any idea on how to make it run to its true speed?

do you have a distributor on that engine?if so there is a grease fitting so it can move and advance timing..

thank you very much for you're feedback! ill give it a shot and let you know

When you open the throttle, the assembly above the distributor moves further AFTER the distributor bottoms out at full spark advance. This opens the carbs. Over the decades the grease inside solidifies and locks it up. When that happens the carbs barely open.

Check yours out for motion.
