73 evinrude tach issue

Hi My 1973 65 HP evinrude runs like it was new, I recently installed a new tach but it cuts out at 5000 rpm. I replaced the tach so it is not the problem. I have the tach set to the correct cylinders on the back, checked all the connections and still nothing past 5000 rpm. Any Ideas??
