hi
In an earlier post I was going to mount the Faria surface mount temperature sending unit.. but its having issue trying to get it a good smooth contact.... I contacted Faria and they don't make another type just ones that Screw into the water jacket

I did ask for ohms for the readings so maybe you guys would know an alternative sending unit that will work with this engine

ohm range is 1195 ohms at 60 degrees and 46.5ohms at 220 degrees

I attached a pdf of the temperature curve if that helps

Return the gauge to Faria if they don't have a sender mounting system that suites your needs. Teleflex offers four different sender mounting options for their gauges. On my 1991 115hp, I used their Z bracket and attach it to one of the cylinder head cover machine screws, to what I found to be the hottest spot (test with an infrared thermometer gun). The Z-bracket is hard to find in stock, so for my 25hp Johnson, I just found a Z shaped part that I had in my junk pile and threaded it to accept the Teleflex sender.

The Teleflex Z bracket is IA55009, and my sender is 52320S010, it is threaded for 1/8-27 NPT

Scroll to the bottom of this link and you'll see the four mounting options Teleflex offers: http://www.jamestowndistributors.com/userportal/document.do?docId=842

My Infrared Temp gun, works great - http://www.amazon.com/Etekcity-Lase...pebp=1436025016961&perid=1TG1V3XA10S73Z3F1RZ8

Here's a Z bracket mounted exactly like mine (but on a different engine).

hi there
I do have a spare Z bend from Teleflex as it was for the mercury engine I have I didn't use it on it

ill see about taking it back

faria offers these sending units
http://faria-instruments.com/products.php?calledGauge=4_temp

but told me they only designed to be in the water jacket not to be surface mounted on the head would you think it matters?? as these look like teleflexs sensors too

If Faria says not to use their gauge that way, listen to them. Just return it to Faria and go with Telelflex or another that works with your Z-bracket. See your private emails, I sent you one.

By the way, the gauges are so inexpensive that I also installed a water pressure gauge to keep a constant eye on the condition of the impeller. One day I noticed the water pressure gauge go down a tad, and the water temperature also rose some. So, I stopped the engine and looked at the intakes and found them covered with scum (Just from running in a freshwater lake in Florida. The boat is kept out of water). I brushed it off with a plastic brush and turned on the engine and all was fine again. No guessing.

and how does a water pressure sensor work do you put that in the water hose that goes from the thermostat to head

You get yourself a plastic T hose fitting like in this kit http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0..._m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=02AVSDBZMY7TAWZP1T9R , and you cut the telltale tubing (peehole tube) and use the T to re-connect it and the other end goes to the gauge via the 25' or whatever lenght you need hose. You can get the barbed T fitting at Ace Hardware or wherever, it is for hot saltwater water flowing through it. The tubing is the same as is used for marine speedometers: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-FARIA-1...ING-/131313874624?hash=item1e92eab6c0&vxp=mtr
