1999 Johnson running. Very rough

My 50 hp Johnson suddenly started missing and jerking while going down the lake. I thought it was missing and put new spark plugs in and they are both firing. It will start but jerks around violently and won't rev up. Any ideas?

You've a bad ignition miss. Pack, coil, stator or timer base.

Is there a way to make sure which it is?

Consider SLOW mode too. If it overheats, it will do that.
