I purchased the boat/motor about 2 months ago. Motor ran really good the first couple of trips out although it did seem to have a slight rough idle, but I took it as being normal. Then last week I went out bass fishing for a full day, I was mostly idling/going at slow speeds along the shoreline. After the first couple of hours the motor started idling really rough/shaking, it would even misfire every once in a while. By the end of the day the motor would just die at idle and even when going up to WOT on the way back to the boat launch it would bog down at around 4500rpms and the rpms would be erratic. Pulled the plugs shortly after and they were wet with gas and completely black(which probably explains the WOT issue due to fouled plugs). Motor seems to be idling very rich.
I have set the idle speed to 1000rpm up from 800rpm(which helped smooth out some of the motor shaking), synched the carbs, adjusted pilot screws to 2 turns out(they were at 2 1/2 turns out), adjusted the valves, and changed the spark plugs. Will be doing compression check tonight or tomorrow night.
After all adjustments I ran the motor at idle on muffs with new plugs and after about 30 min I pulled the plugs and they were wet/black again.
Took the boat out for a couple hours on Saturday and no more problems with WOT pulls strong and gets up to around 6000rpm with no hesitation or bogging. Still idles rough and seems like the longer the motor idles the worse it gets(guessing because plugs load up with fuel).
Could dirty carbs cause something like this? (by the looks of the screws/bolts id say they have never been pulled of the motor)
Also, could it be the starting enrichment valve that stuck open? Anyway to check this?
Ignition issue?
Any thoughts/ideas would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Armandt
