2005 8hp 4S problems. Won't idle, no water out the tell tale.

Hi guys, first post, and would like to thank you all in advance for the help!

Bought the outboard new, and it has run exclusively in salt water for my 26ft sailboat. Probably has around 125-150 hours total.

It starts easily enough, but will not idle (engine hot or cold) without all the choke or around 20% throttle. Makes it difficult to switch gear with the ominous "clank."

Also, the "tell tale" has very little, if any water coming from it.

This outboard has been flushed after each use and been allowed to shutoff after all fuel burned out.

Thoughts? Advice? Need more info? Thank is advance!

I'd be inclined to give the carburettor a clean. The choke is pulling fuel through allowing it to run which means it is probably lean from blocked jets. Here is a vid on doing that job: https://youtu.be/ye_Ui9D8dBE

With regards to the cooling water, has the impeller been checked? I'm not sure if this motor has been getting serviced but you should really be doing 50/100 hour services on it. Changing the impeller isn't a huge job, particularly with a small motor: https://youtu.be/IqNk4P94wOs

Thank you for the help and insight, Stuart. I cleaned the carb and changed the impeller. The thing is running well, even at low idle and seems to be circulating water well. Much thanks for posting those videos and taking the time to help out!
