I have a 1992 Mercury 40 hp oil injected motor and I found a puddle of black sludge leaking out of the prop exhaust area. I checked the lower unit oil and it was clean meaning still blue in color no white frothy stuff and no leaking around the prop seal.
I did a lot of idling last week while trolling which I normally don't do if that helps narrow it down.
