Fuel connector required?

Hi All! I just baught 2 new 6 gallon fuel tanks for my 1985 mariner 75 hp. I also baught the attwood fuel line with bulb and sprayless tank connector. My question is can i run the fuel line directly to the fuel pump and eliminate the mercury connector on the engine or do I have to use this (see attached photo).

Yes. I've seen where a guy ran a fuel hose about 6 inches out of the cowling then adapted it to his 'normal' fuel connector.

Thanks Jeff, My plan is to put a barbed fitting right on the fuel pump and run the fuel line directly to it, I just wanted to make sure I wouldnt have pressure problems with out the merc fitting on it ( didnt know if it acted as a check valve).
