Replacing Impeller on 40HP 1995

Quick question. I replaced the impeller myself about 4 years ago and ran into some trouble. The instructions I had said to place throttle in frwd before removing lower unit. Which I did. I replaced everything and put the lower unit back on. When I hit the water, frwd ended up going in reverse. I was baffled and had to take to a mechanic to fix.

Question: is it necessary to put throttle in frwd? If so, what did i do wrong to cause things being reversed?

Thanks as I am going to give this a try one more time.

If you happen to stab it wrong just take it back out move the remote and stab it again.

I had an 89 model and I would leave it in neutral, when I got ready to put it back together I just spun prop to make use it was in neutral.

You probably hit the sifter or moved the shaft changing what gear it was in.

Yup^^

Doesn't have to be forwards, it can be neutral or reverse, as long as the lower unit is in the same gear as the engine when you put it back together.
