Hi everyone. I recently got a Chrysler 9.9 HP model 92H0G. I cleaned up the points, magneto, gave it a couple pulls and it sputtered and started. Lucky me.

First, motor in neutral, gas tank level with motor, full choke, it starts up, runs for a few seconds, sputters and dies. Primer bulb goes soft. I tried pumping the bulb, same result.

Second, how can I tell if its pumping water? I took apart the leg, impeller looks OK, spins free with a little resistance.

The fuel pump diaphragm probably needs to be changed.
Clean the carb.
Front top of the carb is the air/fuel screw for running at idle.
Turn it in. until it stops GENTLY!!!
Remember the amount of turns.
Reset after cleaning.
To set a carb. Start at 1-1/2 turns out.
Then in 1/8th turn wait 10 seconds for the fuel to be burned. Then in another 1/8th
Again waiting 10 seconds.
Do this until the motor coughs, bucks or stalls. Then out 1/2 turn.

Pumping water: The leg has to be DEEP in a bucket.
It has to be 2-4in over the cavitation plate.
How old is the impeller?
Older than 3-4 years? Change it.

Thanks. I ordered the pump kit. For $7 I figured screw it. Am I right in seeing that the impeller doesn't spin in neutral because its spun by the driveshaft? It has to be in gear to actually pump water? Also is there a place to see water physically pumping out on this motor?

If the motor's running the pump is turning.
The driveshaft is turning if it's running.
The prop shaft turns when in gear.

DEEEEEP in a bucket. HAS to be over the cavitation plate by 2-4in.
Run for 20-30 seconds. No longer.
If you don't see water then the pumps not working or it's not together right???
Take a hose and hook it to the pickup tube and see if water comes back down the exhaust.
I don't think this one comes with a thermostat.
So it should flow when you hook up the hose.
Like I said earlier if the impeller is old it might not be good??
It can look good but still be bad???

So I ordered an impeller, figured what the hell. I have it apart, hooked the hose directly to the water tube in the upper half but no water, only a couple drips out of the exhaust

It's possible the thermostat isn't opening if there is one.
It shouldn't necessarily come out there.
Try back flushing those holes.
If it sat that long it might have a million bugs living in there?

Ah well after some research, apparently those weep holes are just an overflow. All the pump does is spray water up the tube at the bottom of the motor and the majority drains out the exhaust.. So its actually working fine.

I wish. I rebuilt the fuel pump. Put it on the boat in the water to test it. Runs OK for about 15 seconds then runs itself out of gas. The primer bulb is completely empty.

The primer bulbs only job is to push fuel to the carb.
After that it just sets there and does nothing.
It's not supposed to go flat.
If it does that? then the vent isn't open on the tank.
The pump is easy to fix.
