1991 omc cobra 3.0 loud noise coming from back of engine

At the back of the engine just behind where the gear comes out and goes into the out drive there is a loud noise like metal bouncing on metal way louder when at low idle or neutral any ideas what it could be fess we have to pull the motor
 
Could be a failed u-joint. That would show up if you took the drive off the gimbal. 6 nuts and a gasket is easier than taking out the engine.
Otherwise it could be the coupler failed which does mean removing the lump.
 
Thanks for the reply I have to pull the drive to take out the engine I think anyways so I will check that first and post my findings
