Troubleshoot Shift Cable?

1979 I/O 305 V8 Chevy Engine 228 hp on VIP bow rider.
Can shift into reverse, but not drive. Will this require new shifting cable/repair, or can it be adjusted?
How to trouble shoot?
 
start by removing the drive and inspection the components. There are specific procedures in the manual for testing. You can start by removing the lower shift cable at the rear plate and try getting into fwd manually. If that does not work, time too remove the drive and inspect everything.
 
First off what work if any was recently done to the outdrive or motor?

There could be many reasons for this. It could be the shift linkage in the gimbal housing or the outdrive or it could be a shift cable issue.
