4236 crank gear fitting

Hi - first post on this forum so hello to all.

I'm currently on repairing a 4236 (in a Land Rover but I joined this forum as there seems to be plenty Perkins chat - hope you guys don't mind!!). I'm about to fit a new crankshaft but my gear for the front seems very very tight. Needs to be hammered on and with it having a keyway it has to go on right. I'm not happy with the excessive hammering so haven't fitted it yet. I'm guessing heating the gear will help - any advice on this? I'm thinking boil it in water for half an hour then fit it - but will it expand enough or does it need to be hotter??
Any tips appreciated.
