Unleaded petrol in Mercruiser 228

Nope,.... Go ahead, 'n run it,....

It'll takes thousands, 'n thousands of hours to cause valve seat damage,....
If by some chance, it ain't already got hardened valve seats,...

Unleaded gasoline became a mandate at/near/around 1974...... with some sources suggesting a bit earlier.
Most all engines were fitted with the hardened valve seats during or shortly after this time as to accommodate the non-leaded gasoline.
The Merc 228 dates back to around 1978 or so... perhaps a bit earlier.

Keep in mind that the Marine gasser is under a heavier load than it's automotive cousin, and is under this heavier load for a much longer duration.
This means that cylinders, pistons, valves, etc, are undergoing more heat than their automotive cousins are.... and particularily the exhaust valves!

If there is a place for hardened valve seats (for use with non-leaded gasoline), it's certainly with the Marine Engine!
