I am rebuilding a boat and I need to rebuild the sterndrive or replace it. The lower unit has cracked due to freezing. Trying to decide if I should have it rebuilt somewhere or just replace it. I want it reliable. It's a 1971 from a slickcraft 215. I live in Indianapolis so any comments or suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks
 
As long as the crack is not into the bearing area you can have it welded..... Is it only near the drain liug???


It must be dissassembled cleaned and I would leave the forward bearing race in place to maintain position as long as the welding will not get to close to it. If the welding will get within a 1/4 inch the remove bearing race.
