What is Tube on top/front of 40 hp Gearcase?

I have a n '02 Mercury 40 hp Bigfoot 4 stroke serial OT505263
There is a black plastic/rubber tube hanging from a nipple on the top/front above gearcase. Maybe 1/4 inch id. Cannot find any reference to it in the manual. What is it for and where is it supposed to go? Muskrat or something chewed it off once already but no water in gear lube so seems no permanent damage.

Good answer! It must be the speedometer tube as our pontoon does not have a speedometer so the tube is just flopping around down there.
It is a 4 cyl. Now that you led me to the parts lists I can see the tube ( but not where it hooks to the housing).
