318 Thermostat

I had my 1969 Chrysler M318 rebuilt last year and the mechanic failed to reinstall the thermostat. When I went to install it myself, I cannot determine the proper positioning of the thermostat in the housing. It seems that I can install it either correctly or upside down but I don't know the correct position. Can someone provide me some direction? Thanks.

If yours is like mine it has a "foot valve" which looks like a large cup attached to it. The large cup part goes up into the thermostat housing and the "pill" goes down. When I bought my boat I had a horrible time with overheating until I found that the previous owner had installed this upside down.

Ah-hem! The legion of folks doing that equals those who forgot to put the plug in!

Easy way to remember the correct orientation is to visualize what goes on inside the t-stat: The little can contains wax that heats up and opens the valve, hence is ALWAYS goes toward the warmed up coolant.
