Yamaha Malta cooling water flow

Hi all,
Last Sunday I bought Yamaha Malta 6L5 S 009827 F from 1988. At the seller's I tested it in a bin. Everything working and almost new looking. I forgot (stupid of me!) to check the cooling water flow from the tell tale.
At home I remembered and ran the motor again in the bin. No water.
Checked the impeller: good. Removed the thermostat and ran the motor in gear, at about 1/3 throttle (maximum possible in the bin) for about 1 hour, The temperature of cylinder and headstock, continuously checked by finger, is always cool. Very little water is sprinkled from the pressure relieving holes half-way down the leg. No water from the little hole under the cylinder.

I do not know this motor.
Is the above behaviour OK?
What should be seen when cooling water is circulating correctly?
Can I trust the motor as it is?
Or shall I clean the waterways?

After all it is not overheating. I shall test it soon on the boat at higher RPM and report here.

Thanks to all who will advise me.
Best regards.

Sandro
