140 mercruiser

I recently purchased a 1972 mrcruiser 140; cranks and runs good. I was running it on the muffs. It suddenly started having a vibration and noise from stern . Noise decreases when stern is turned a little. I have no idea where to begin..looking for the problem.
 
most likely the gimbal bearing , need to remove the drive to inspect and replace if necessary. Other item may be the U joints going bad

Ayuh,.... Shift it to Forwards, 'n pull the drive to see what's worn out,....

Drain the drive oil, 'n Look for metal shavin's,...
