2002 9.9 Tiller poor running

Hello Everyone! I'm new to this forum. I am the original owner of a 2002 9.9 powerthrust Honda that I use as a kicker for my 21' fishing boat. I recently replaced the water pump that was pretty well gone. I found all the rubber pieces in the screen area and pulled the thermostat while it was running to make sure any rubber pieces were flushed out as well.

The engine is running rough. It was starting this before the impeller changeout, but now it simply won't idle and stumbles, misfires and generally works like crap. What I've done so far:
1. Try different fuel;
2. Pull the plugs inspect and verify gap at 0.30;
3. removed the carb entirely - pulled the float bowl off, shot out all the orifices with carb cleaner. I did not disassemble the floats, or remove jets.
4. Put it all back together again. Still runs lousy.

There are two things that you need to make sure you get the correct carburetor.

The motor frame serial number and more importantly, the number embossed on the top of your carburetor...like BJ02B A.

The carburetor pictured is for a pull start motor. If yours is electric start, the carburetor is different.

Post your numbers and we'll check for the correct part number.

The part number that you are showing should be correct. The carb number indicates that it is an manual start motor. It is a little newer vintage than yours. It should work fine.

If your gaskets have ripped, you should replace them also.

The carb in the photo and the carb they sent were different. They sent the remote choke version. I was hopeful that the connection was identical - but no.

Then, pissed, I took a dremel to the idle screw and shroud to put a slot in the damn thing. Trimmed the shroud, slotted the head of the idle screw. Backed it out with a screwdriver. The tip was covered in carbon. I took the whole carb back apart and cleaned it all out. Put it back together and it has never run better. The idle is likely a bit richer than EPA wants it to be, but the smoothness, lack of hesitation, transition from idle circuit to main is great. It never worked this good.

I would certainly try to return the carburetor. The part number that was listed was correct also.

It may have just been picked wrong in their warehouse.

It is good to hear that you have succeeded in your carburetor cleaning adventure.
