2005 90 HP merc 4 stroke, starter smokes while eng is running

I have a 05 4 stroke merc, and this is second time this summer, I took boat out, and suddenly engine quits and smoke rolls out from under cover, took cover off and it was coming from the starter motor, and of coarse it would not start again, what could be the cause, replacing the starter is easy but not cheap, any one has any clues on what is causing the problem? I hate to just buy, replace a bunch of unnecessary things. any help is appreciated

the solenoid may be staying picked...points may be welded closed..if the problem occurs while the shift lever is in neutral the problem could be in the switch...the pick for the solenoid feeds through the neutral switch and then the ignition switch ..does the ignition switch return to run when you release it?
