35 hp wiring harness

I have a 1984 35 hp johnson needing a new wiring harness. I have been told I must have a red plug boot on the new harness, however all the new ones I see are black. Any ideas? Are they all black now or do I need to find a used one? Thanks, ribeye
 
I put a new wiring harness on my 87 150 Johnson and the plug for it was black but it fit right in to my red plug and everything went together just fine and everything works as it should. The harness was built by CDI and sold thru iboats; but you can get the same thing here on this site. Good luck.
 
The plug color indicates the wiring system used. In theory, you cannot mix colors, but you might get lucky. Or unlucky, if the wires you need do not exist in it. Aftermarket ones? I have no idea what other companies make.
 
Prior to installing the harness I did check to make sure the wires were there and the colors and the lenght were correct and maybe I just got lucky but CDI is a pretty reputable company.
