I have a 2000 Mercury 50 hp 4 stroke . I have read that by taking out the restrictor plate I can make it a 60 hp. Is this true , if so how do I do it?

If you have a 2000 model it will have a 57 cubic inch displacement powerhead that was shared with the 40 and 45 horse.

In 2001 (and newer), they changed the platform to a 60.8 cubic inch displacement powerhead and built the 50 and 60 with the same parts.

In 2002 they added the 40 horse to the platform.

So before you consider anything further you need to be absolutely sure what it is you have.

A serial (production) number of 0T178500 and above would be (mechanically) the same, with the same displacement as the 60 horse.

A serial below that, or any starting with 0Gxxxxxx is already at the top of it's game...

Mine is OT164012 so I guess there would be no gain by removing restrictor plate
