1985 Johnson 140hp engaging reverse problems

Hi guys, hoping someone can shed some light on my problem, I must point out now, I know nothing about engines.I have a 1985 Johnson 140hp, Trim & Tilt Electric Start, Length 20”.

With engine off....
In neutral propeller turns in both directions with no sound.
In forward propeller will not turn in either direction.
In reverse propeller will turn in both directions with a clicking sound.

With engine on.......
Lever slips into forward with no problem and the propeller turns.
Lever slips into reverse with no problem, however, when I start to add power, there is a clicking sound from the control box. It will after a few seconds go into reverse and the propeller turns. Under load, in the water, it continues to click, getting faster the more power, but will not engage into reverse.

I have an OMC control box (picture 1) and if anyone knows, I have no idea what A and B are for.

In the engine (picture 2) shows the SHIFT and POWER cables coming into the engine bay. The bottom one is shift.

(Picture 3) shows the adjustment I presume for the shift and power. The round disks only turn approx one turn before stopping, they are both the same, maybe by design or because of corrosion?? I have no idea and do not want to force anything without knowing what I am supposed to do.

So here’s hoping someone can give me an idiots guide to fix my problem.

If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Regards

Peter
