275 pops out of fwd gear

Hi all,
Got this boat several years ago and has worked flawlessly until yesterday.
Got up to about 10 mph/2500rpm and it was like to prop came off. Slowed engine, put into N then back into fwd., idled back to dock.
Did a visual inspection of shifting cable and all is good there. Stays in gear at lower rpm fine...
My question: is it possible for the cone drive to be "worn" and disengage like this?

Any ideas?

Thanks, Lawrence

The nature of the cone clutch typically causes it to remain even further engaged with a load on it.
It's more likely that your prop hub is slipping.

Remove the prop, mark both the center section and the outer prop hub area by scribing a line through both.
Re-install, and test.
If the line has shifted, the hub is bad.

It was just as you said; the center spun out of the rubber isolator. New prop or repair is in the works.
We sure appreciate the info!
Lawrence
