When changing the water pump on my 25 Evinrude 1989, I picked up on the driveshaft while the pump assy was out. the shaft came up about 2 in. and now will not go back down all the way and engage the gears. Do I need to pull the gears out to fix or is there a trick?
Thanks for any info. It only lacks about 3/16 inch of being down.

No tricks here at all.--It is splined and will simply slide back in to where it was before.----Have had more than on of these units apart before.---Nothing to it at all.--You may have to turn it a bit to line up the splines.

Racerone, is there any chance of a spacer or flat thrust washer sliding out of place and or into the wrong place in the housing?

Thanks for the ideas. I did get the shaft to finally go into place and got it back together. Still not cooling. It is running exhaust(hot air under pressure) out of the telltale hose and plenty of water out of the exhaust ports. Going to start pulling the covers off the bypass and the thermostat and hope it is just a gasket.
