Alternator Belt Hot and Squealing

Hi Guys,

I ran my 1997 GT-40 yesterday all morning without a problem, but after lunch I took it out and it stalled and would not start again. It would turn over nicely but would just not kick in. So not a battery issue. I put it back in the water this morning and it started just fine but when in neutral with the throttle applied it would squeal like crazy and then the belt where it connected to the alternator would start to smoke lightly (from friction). The belt got super hot so I pulled the boat out of the water and back on the trailer.

I did take a video of the squealing to show you what happens, but is this a bad alternator, or is it something I can fix easily?

Thanks a bunch!

Thanks guys. I replaced the belt and the squealing stopped. It still wouldn't start tho. So next thing I got was some fuel additive to see if that would help. Put that in and waited for a while and tried to get it started and it finally ran. Took it out for about a hour and it ran just fine.

all very weird. I'm not convinced it's fixed but will try it again tomorrow!
