Oil for 165 inline 4?

I have a 165 inline 4 (1988?) that was just rebuilt. Time for its first oil change. I don't have a manual (boat, new to me, didn't come with one). The sticker on the engine says to use 40w. The oil cap says 10w-30 and I've heard that mercriuser says use 20w-50 in all their engines. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

when I had my v6 4.3 rebuilt I used 10-40 penz oil with Lucas engine break in oil additive ran for 20 hrs. and refilled with Penzoil I also primed the oil pump and lifters before starting the engine
To answer your question I would go by the engine sticker 40wt

Thanks. I guess I'll use 10w-30 as that's what it says on the cap. I used an extractor and got 4 1/2 quarts. Any idea how much it's supposed to hold ?

Oops. Just saw that you recommended 40w instead of the 10w-30. Just went out and bought a case of 10w-30 and was going to fill er up tomorrow. I run her in the ocean in fairly cold (high 50's to high 60's) most of the time if that makes any difference. Any reason not to use 10w-30?

Back in the 80's, many ran straight 40 weight oil, wasn't too easy to find, Kendall was my choice. Anyway, I would recommend 25W40 Merc or Rotella 15W40....I would not use 10W30. There will be a significant difference in the oil pressure comparing 10W30 to say 15W40. 15W40 will make higher pressure.

Ok. I guess I'll return the 10W-30. West marine has a 25W-40 synthetic (Sierra I think?) so I will probably go with that unless I hear differently.
