5 hp Shift lever adjustment

I have a 1999 mercury 5HP 2 cycle. I successfully changed out the impeller, however the shift leaver did not go back adjusted correctly. When it shows in neutral it is actually in forward and I have to push it back hard to get into reverse. Made for an interesting day on the lake. Is there a procedure for getting that linkage adjusted correctly or is this a matter of repeatedly adjusting it until the correct adjustment is found.

Piece of cake: Get the LU in neutral, loosen the adjustment, and put the lever in neutral and tighten the adjustment.

here's what could be a dumb question, how do I know when the lower unit is in neutral? Do I need to take the lower unit off again? Maybe I am over thinking this....

The prop spins freely in both direction: in F it will click one way and not move the other way, in R it won't move either way.
