1980 35HP Prop Shaft Installation

I have an E35ELCSM I am replacing the lower end seals in. I need some advice on installing the prop shaft. I do not have the "special tool" to hold the spring and two balls. Is there a substitute or a trick? It looks like the tool indexes in the dog to put the balls in the correct location and holds the balls recessed until ready to push in? It also says you can be 180 degrees out. Can somebody help please.
 
Hey thanks, that was a great idea. I took a piece of Sch80 1" PVC, bored the end out to 2" back from the .940 it came as to .972 where it would just slip over the splines, cut two notches for the dog, and knocked it right in. I had to make a mark on the dog and the pipe to make sure I got it on the right side of the dog but it worked great.
