"Matt.... The engine is a 1968

"Matt.... The engine is a 1968 18hp Evinrude. The 50/1 fuel/oil mixture will be just fine. Use "HiVis" (80/90w) lube in the lower unit. You'll find the "HiVis" (LubriMatic) in K-Mart and also Wal*Mart at a more reasonable price than a marine dealership. Check the compression (it should be around 100 psi and even on both cyls), then check the spark with the s/plugs out (it should jump a 1/4" gap with a strong blue flame on both cyls. Note... when a engine sits for any length of time, the carburetor will foul and gum up. If the engine will not run properly (bad idle, hard starting etc) you may need to remove the carb, clean and rebuild it.

" I currently own 18hp fastwin

" I currently own 18hp fastwin. I am interested in finding out about a problem I having with the lower unit, possibly. The lower unit seems to jump out of gear under strain or acceleration. The engine tone does not change. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. "
