Oil question

A couple weekes ago I was out on the lake when I look back and the back of my '88 bayliner capri is filling with water. I popped the engine cover off and I had water leaking in from what I believe is the oil cooler. It's made from copper, has honeycomb holes inside and 4 hoses connect to it. I got it off, braised it back together, but I am wondering, if it's an oil cooler and water and oil run through it, what oil would I be replacing? And where at? Anything helps guys
