Sharing common fuel line with inboard and kicker

I just installed a 9.9 mercury kicker on my Byliner that has a 125 Volvo inboard and tided them both into the spin on fuel filter.
I placed a shut off valve on each line so when one engine engine is running the other valve is closed,so the running engine will not suck the fuel out of the other engine.

Is this the normal way of doing it ? or can I get away with out using gait valves ,as it is a pain always to remove the engine cover and switch the valves .
