mcm 350 mag knocking and backfiring after trying to crank

got a prob with my 1996 mcm 350 mag. my son said he couldn't get it to crank and tried for awhile. went down to the dock and noticed it didn't sound normal turning over. let it sit and went back later and finally got it to crank. it was making a knocking sound and running rough. also was backfiring. shut it down. it was running fine when until now. could this be a timing prob. any help would be appreciated
 
might be water in a cylinder or two. pull the sparkplugs to check for water, if none found, remove the filters and pour the gas into a clean container for inspection
