'95 Yamaha P150 TLRT Ground wires burnt up by jackplate motor?

My boat is outfitted with an old CMC jack plate. The electric motor (DCH-2500) brushes went bad and me, so I replaced them. The jack plate and motor worked fine for 4 trips. I had a solder connection come loose and the electric motor went straight to ground. Back into the motor i went and fixed it again. The motor was running fine and seemingly normal, didn't get hot, no unusual sounds, no hot wires. Next thing i knew had a flash and fire on the back of the boat. For some reason it burnt 2 ground wires located on the upper casing. I believe they are labeled lead 4 and lead 5 part #'s 6E5-82148-00-00, 6E5-82147-00-00. The battery terminals are clean and connections are good. Does anyone know why this may have happened and does anyone know what kind of mess I'm getting into to replace these ground wires?

Thank you for any help.
