Oil injection system

Just purchased my first boat and I'm totally unfamiliar and confused about the oil injection system. My boat has a white container for oil which is about 2/3 full. I took the cap off and it seems to have gas mixed with the oil because of the smell and consistency. Does gas from the fuel tank come into the oil tank?:( PLEASE HELP

What motor do you have as not every motor is the same these days.-----------------If it was a big Mercury then yes there could be a smell of gasoline since crankcase compression is used on the oil tank.
 
The tank may be pressurized from crankcase compression.------Double line hose going to / from the tank ??????.-------This certainly would put a gas smell into your oil tank.
