Hello!

I've got a Mariner 40 HP probably from the 80's that needs a new lower unit, but i can't find the year of Production. May somebody here help me?

THe Serial number is 40E 6 S 104434

I have similar problem...
Been through several sites
Can't get an exact match on:
Mariner 40E 6E9 S 103700

Anybody able to match this up ?

Closest I found :
40C E 6E9-102889 - 6E9-103918 1984
There is not a "C" on my tag

Thanks
Tim

Your serial number is coming up as an 1985 short shaft, Model number 7040505.

6E9L 411198 is the Yamaha Primary Identification. AKA the PID. Not the model of the motor.

6E9 being the Yamaha prefix code. L indicating the shaft length. 411198 being the Yamaha serial number.

From where does marinengine.com get their data? Reason why I ask is because Yamaha documentation indicates 6E9L 411198 to be a 1984 model year motor.
I believe it should be that both Marine Engine and crowleymarine and others pull the info from Mercury marine databases of the engines they have sold and use for parts look up. There is a trick at making the serial numbers work for these styles of serial number ranges (6E9, etc.) for a computer search look up.

While I have found it hasn't been 100 percent effective at finding all year or model numbers to the Yamaha shipped to Merc for building completions here in the US as some don't pull up at all and others tend to give a list of engine HP to choose from, generally depending on a roundabout year model that may come up, the Merc system tends to also pull up a model number. 'In essence, the model number is considered the part number of the engine when made/sold new...
...And I'll add I have found that some computer searches have tend to of been off by a year or 2, others have been right on when searching the chart system for comparison.

Over the years of helping find year models like this I never really used a chart from Yamaha (though I've seen it) I had just always went to a chart under Mariner in-which gives the 6E9 serial number to year range too before discovering the computer trick and again is either close to the Mariner chart or right on...Sometimes I'll check either just 1 of them, both or more depending on time allowed, etc.. This case was just one check.

So this mentioned, in checking the chart I tend to use suggests this engine to be a 1983 year model putting it in between your 1984 find and mine of 1982...6E9 L 411198
40C EL6E9-407936 - 6E9-4118591983

Or the potential 1982 model depending on how one reads the chart...And "might" be how the computer search is generated to suggest 1982.
40 EL6E9-402516 -1982

The chart used is here for your comparisons if desired, https://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/page/608047

Searching the serial number we're in question of on the 2 websites both generate model number: 7040522

An comparison to our trusted master engine look up specialist galamb (in which galamb hasn't posted online since 3/10/2020? Hope he's okay🙏)
This past engine was a 1982 model too in which I'd put the model number to be 7040522 while trying to be careful not to suggest it being a 1978 year model that also popped up on the list of possibilities 7040528..., https://www.marineengine.com/boat-f...-hp-tag-reads-mariner-40e-6e9-l-40430.419244/

7040522
^To read the model number the 040 would be the engine HP (40hp) (or pretend 140hp) while the last 2 in this case would make the engine end in the year 2 so 82... While the other model number I mentioned with the possibility 8 at the end suggests 1978.

In searching your serial number ‘Your model number is 7040522 making the engine to be a 1982 Outboard 40 [EL]. (L=Long Shaft)...Search the model number online too,

THANK YOU .

Thank you , ( Intristing ) Thanks for all the Input , shads a little More LIGHT on things .

Looks to be remarkably similar to a Yamaha USA model CV40ELD. If parts cannot be found for the Mercury model then perhaps they can be had from Yamaha US. If available.
